Tips for Styling the Glass Cabinets in Your Kitchen

Glass cabinets in the kitchen are becoming more and more popular among homeowners, but knowing how to style them can feel overwhelming.

Whether it’s a renovation or a new build, many homeowners opt for upper glass cupboards in their kitchens. Glass cupboards can look sleek, modern, and clean — as long as they are styled that way. It’s easy to feel stressed out and overwhelmed with this process, especially if you aren’t comfortable with interior design and styling.

The items you put in these cabinets are visible for everyone to see and significantly impact your kitchen’s overall look and feel. Thankfully, there are some simple tricks you can apply to help your kitchen cupboards function perfectly and look great!

3 Tips for Styling Your Glass Cabinets in Your Kitchen

Don’t let styling the glass cupboards in your kitchen paralyze you! It’s easier than you might think when you apply the following tips. Here’s what you need to know:

  1. Choose a Color Palette You Love — The first thing you will want to do is choose a color palette for your space. But before you make any decisions, look around your kitchen and take it in.
What color are your cupboards, countertops, and floors? A common theme among homes today is an all-white kitchen, which makes choosing a color palette easy since you have virtually countless options.
However, if you’re working with wood tones or painted cabinets that aren’t in the white family, your choices can become more limited.

Find a color family that works well with the rest of your kitchen. This will help keep your space looking clean and cohesive. If you have many different colors in all of your glass cupboards, your kitchen will tend to look disconnected and a bit messy.

There’s a solution. Display items that match your color palette in your glass cabinets, and store any dishes and serving ware that don’t fit into the color scheme in cabinets with solid doors.

Give your kitchen a beautiful and cohesive look by sticking with one to three complementary colors when styling your glass cupboards. Keep in mind that you do not have to keep the same color scheme all year long. You can change your color scheme as your style or mood changes or with the weather or seasons.

In spring and summer, you can lighten up your space with varying shades of cream and white with a few subtle splashes of lighter blue, green, gray, or pink, depending on your preference.

As temperatures begin to drop in fall and winter, you can visually warm up your interiors with touches of darker tones, like green, copper, or natural wood tones. Regardless of the season, sticking with two or three accent colors will keep your kitchen looking clean, organized, and crisp.

If things look a bit flat, instead of adding in an additional color or two, incorporate items in the same color family that vary in texture. This will add tons of interest and dimension without muddying up your color story.

  1. Create a Sense of Balance — Having the right balance and size of items in your glass-front cupboards will make a massive difference in your kitchen’s overall look and feel. Too many larger-sized things on one side of your cabinets can feel heavy
At the same time, a bunch of smaller things can look cluttered. Creating a sense of balance is key! It’s best to combine larger decor items and dishes mixed with clusters of smaller pieces.

Most cabinet doors divide the glass, so you can approach decorating these spaces in two columns. Add a couple of stacks of plates side by side and place a canister on top of a few cookbooks. The varying heights give your cupboards interest. A soup tureen or oversized pitcher placed on the opposite side will create balance.

  1. Keep Things Functional and Practical — Yes, there’s no denying that having your glass cupboards look beautiful is nice, but it’s also vital that they are functional.

The key to maintaining a functional kitchen is keeping the things you use daily easily accessible and within reach to everyone. While your heirloom china is gorgeous and unique, it’s unnecessary to store it where your everyday plates, bowls, and glasses should go. Moreover, it makes emptying your dishwasher much easier.

The stuff you don’t use very often or only on special occasions or purely decorative items should go on the higher shelves that are a bit more difficult to reach. You put a lot of effort into styling your cabinets, so by implementing this method, your cupboards can stay as you styled them and will only require a few adjustments on the lowest shelves as necessary.
